Taking Care of Your Teeth

Teeth are supposed to be simple. You brush them. You floss them. You schedule checkups with your dentist. But most folks do not follow these simple rules, which can lead to serious problems.

Why do people neglect their teeth? Perhaps they assume the consequences will be relatively minor. After all, for most people, a cavity is the most serious dental issue they have ever experienced. But cavities can actually be quite serious if they are ignored.

Believe it or not, hundreds of people die each year because of cavities. As you might expect, most of these deaths occur in Third World nations where access to dental care is limited. But even in more modern countries where teeth whitening and tooth whitening are the primary dental concern, cavities can cause a whole host of problems.

When a cavity is neglected, one thing is for certain — the cavity will grow bigger and cause more damage to the tooth. In time, the cavity can even spread to the root and cause an abscess or infection. If the patient somehow ignores the excruciating pain caused by the abscess, the infection may spread to the brain, which can be fatal.

Of course, this is an extreme example. Cavities rarely result in death. But even so, people often ignore minor tooth pain, which almost always results in greater damage to the teeth. Not to mention much bigger bills when they finally see the dentist.
